Why is plastic soup a problem?

Plastic is a problem because it does not perish. Never. That means that there is more plastic every year. In recent years this was 400 million tons per year. Can you imagine how much that is? The result is that in 20 years’ time there will probably be more plastic floating than fish swimming in the sea. Do you know those heartbreaking images? Seas full of plastic, birds that die because they have more plastic in their stomachs than real food, mountains with litter. This is plastic that we can see. But plastic breaks into pieces. These become microscopic microplastics (up to 5 mm) and nanoplastics (almost invisible microscopically). Micro and nanoplastics are everywhere too. What is the Plastic Soup Foundation doing about the problem?

Plastic pollution is something we have caused ourselves. People are the only ones to blame. But the good news is that we can also tackle this problem quite well ourselves. The Plastic Soup Foundation is one of the largest players when it comes to reducing plastic pollution.

Recycling is only part of the solution. Clean up too. The Plastic Soup Foundation focuses on both education and cleaning the earth in several ways. The PSF mainly focuses on the oceans, but certainly also agricultural land and water. For example, the well-known World Cleanup Day is an initiative of the Plastic Soup Foundation. The Beat the Microbead app, which focuses more on microplastics in cosmetic packaging, is also one of the successful projects.

What can you do about plastic?

Buying as little plastic as possible helps the most. Many products are unnecessarily packed in plastic. Fortunately, this is slightly less in the organic shop. For example, Ekoplaza has a lot of compostable packaging and this organic supermarket has even set the goal to go completely plastic-free. In addition, make sure you have a reusable water bottle and cotton bags with you. Pick up plastic. Only buy care products that do not contain microplastics.
